Strong storms in Israel this week unearthed a forgotten 1,700-year-old Roman statue entombed along the coast:
Ever since last year, when I lobbied to do this slideshow on a hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold discovered in England by an amateur with a metal detector, our staff has given me a hard time about these archaeological slideshows. I do love this stuff. I was 7 or 8 when the King Tut exhibit arrived in New Orleans in 1977, and my plan was to be an archaeologist when I grew up. Things changed of course, but imagine my delight when the staff cooked up this Roman statute slideshow without me even knowing about it.
