The political news universe is generally on hold until mid-morning Thursday when the Supreme Court will deliver its historic decision on the Affordable Care Act. After stuff I heard this morning I think there’s a tiny bit more chance Dems have a good outcome. (Sahil Kapur looks at just how much of ‘Obamacare’ Republicans would actually be able to repeal, regardless of the Court’s decision.) But there’s a raft of new polling news out with pretty good news for President Obama and a major corrective to recent spin about the state of the race.
Coming off strong swing state numbers in yesterday’s NBC/WSJ poll, today Quinnipiac released a batch of swing state polls all of which showed strong numbers for President Obama — seemingly bolstered by his new immigration policy. Mostly notably a big lead in Ohio and a small lead in Florida. (The TPM Electoral Scoreboard moves to Obama 268, Romney 219.)
Any poll is just a snap shot. And as I mentioned a few weeks ago, we all tend to infer a campaign’s wisdom or stupidity based on poll results. But these new numbers at least put a big question mark in front of a month of conventional wisdom that Obama’s campaign has stumbled into the summer. And how President Obama does in Ohio and Virginia matters a whole lot more than convention logistics and attendance in Charlotte, where things are not going quite so well.
