Battle Lines

More signs of a showdown overnight in Egypt. SCAF, which amounts to the top leadership of the Egyptian army, has issued a statement on its Facebook page saying in so many words it’s ready to fight to the death.

I’ve seen more idiomatic translations. But this is one from al Jazeera, which appears to be a very literal, non-idiomatic translation, but nonetheless gets the message across …

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces that we [fight people] that frighten or threaten the Egyptian people, and swear by Allah that Naftda Egypt and its people, our blood against every terrorist or extremist or ignorant.

Long live Egypt and its people lived proud.

Haaretz gives this translation: “We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”

Others translate this as simply: we ‘are ready to die’. Again, point seems pretty clear either way.
