On Monday I wrote that the answer to attacks on journalism is always more journalism. I want to share some concrete steps in that direction. Today we are announcing our first editorial expansion in more than four years. We are beginning by adding a new editor to our team and a planned three additional reporters to build out our investigative reporting team.

We have already hired our new editor, so we won’t be listing for that position. I plan to announce that new member of the staff later this week. Today we are beginning the search for three new investigative reporters. As I noted, these new slots will be focused on investigations and muckraking but in the TPM, iterative style of reporting. We are looking for candidates who are hungry to break a lot of big stories, experienced and smart. Our tentative plan is to assign two of these reporters to our DC office and one to our New York office. But our overriding guide will be where we find the best people.

If you’re an experienced reporter and you want to do big things in this new era, we really, really want to hear from you. Contact us now.

I should add that our planning for this expansion did not start with Trump’s election. It goes back to planning from the middle of 2016 when I announced it in connection with our drive to increase our membership numbers and refocus our business around a greater reliance on subscriptions. But these plans took on a new urgency and focus as we entered the dark, disruptive and rule-breaking era that is now upon us.

We believe that what TPM does and has done for more than 16 years is now as important and likely more important than it has ever been. We are excited by that challenge. I am incredibly excited by what I believe we will be able to do. How is this possible? Mainly because of our success, or rather your success, helping us shift our business model to a greater reliance on paid subscriptions. So a big thanks to you and a big thanks to our staff and indeed many former staffers who in various ways have made it possible for us to get this point. Your subscriptions to Prime are a major part of this.

If you have questions about what we’re doing, drop me a line at talk (at) talkingpointsmemo dot com. If you’re interested in joining our expanding team, see the listing below.

We will have more announcements coming soon.

TPM is hiring three reporters to build out our investigative team to aggressively pursue iterative, investigative journalism in the TPM tradition. These new reporting positions part of a planned general expansion of our editorial team in NY and DC.

Applicants should have 5 and 10 years reporting experience, be hungry to break big stories and be ready to mix good old fashioned reporting skills and digital native tools to identify stories, grab hold of them and not let go until there’s no more news left in them to report.

Our model is iterative journalism, which means we strive not to be captive to any single format but rather let the story and news of the moment dictate the format we use to cover it.

Competitive salary, health insurance coverage (TPM pays 100% of premium), 401k, three weeks paid vacation per year. To apply, send a resume and cover letter to jobs (at) talkingpointsmemo.com. Include the subject line: “Job App: DC Reporter”. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
