For evidence that the U.S. is experiencing a scorcher of a summer, look no further than climatologists and your “historic case of swamp ass,” Stephen Colbert told viewers on Tuesday.
The extreme heat has led to a drought that rivals those of the 1930s Dust Bowl. “For those who aren’t familiar, the Dust Bowl was like John Steinbeck’s ‘The Grapes of Wrath,’ only less dry and easier to get through,” Colbert said.
Farmers should adapt by growing crops that can withstand the heat, Colbert said, like raisins or sun-dried tomatoes. But the drought is affecting more than just crops. Dairy and meat prices are expected to rise in 2013.
“Nation, this shit just got real,” Colbert said. “I mean, it is one thing for global warming to make the sea level rise, but nobody told me it could make my cheese levels recede.”
