Colorado Republican Scott McInnis has offered a private apology to Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs, the Associated Press reports, after a Denver Post story essentially outed McInnis for plagiarizing the judge’s work in a series of past articles about water conservation.

According to the AP, McInnis, who’s running for governor, has no plans to issue a public apology over the incident.

“It was completely regrettable and should have been footnoted,” McInnis spokesperson Sean Duffy told the AP, blaming the mistakes on a research assistant.
