Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) has now officially endorsed Marco Rubio in the Florida Senate race, the latest big-name Republican to get behind Rubio amidst speculation that Gov. Charlie Crist will bolt the GOP primary and run as an independent.
“Newt is supporting Marco Rubio and will be doing what he can to help his campaign,” Gingrich’s spokesman tells CNN. Gingrich said last week that he would endorse Rubio “when the time is right.”
Other Republicans who have endorsed Rubio in recent days include House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), former Vice President Dick Cheney, and former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA).
