House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) thinks Washington has an “illness.” And according to him, that illness is spending.

“The debt is a symptom of that illness,” Boehner reportedly said at a Republican retreat in Baltimore Saturday. “The American people want it cured.”

Boehner aimed his remarks at President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats, saying they “have been on a job-destroying spending spree that has left us with nothing but historic unemployment and the most debt in U.S. history.”

Boehner’s remarks come in advance of a big showdown in Washington over the possible raising of the $14 trillion debt ceiling before the government defaults on its debts.

“If they want us to help pay their bills, they are going to have to start cutting up their credit cards,” Boehner added.
