From The Reporter’s Notebook
Donald Trump spent the morning defending his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who was recently charged with a misdemeanor battery. In his quest to get people off of Lewandowski’s case, Trump even insinuated that Lewandowski shouldn’t be criticized too harshly because previous campaign managers had committed similar offenses, TPM’s Caitlin Cruz reported. He said, “You don’t know that they didn’t do it, because I guarantee you they did, probably did stuff that was more physical than this.” Karl Rove, David Plouffe and David Axelrod all took offense to the insinuation that they had gotten physical with campaign reporters. Rove, who doesn’t have a reputation as particularly press friendly, even condemned the accusation from Trump.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “We’re already hearing Trump talk about pulling out of NATO, withdrawing military support from countries like Saudi Arabia or Japan and Korea. Whether or not you agree with them, there are strong, considered arguments why the US should stop underwriting so much of the defense of regional allies in places like East Asia and adopt a more collaborative defense strategy. But this isn’t what Trump is talking about. This a conversation and getting back at countries who’ve ‘humiliated’ us, ‘laughed’ at us. He has of course also taken to casually discussing using nuclear weapons in what amount to urban warfare situations.”
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “There is so much energy out there trying to vilify Clinton. While I am a Bernie supporter (I voted for him in the GA primary), tearing down the probable nominee of our party is quite self defeating. We have a golden opportunity with the republican party in disarray to start the process for REAL CHANGE but I’m afraid we are going to blow it…yet again. If Bernie supporters want real change here are some things to fight for: remove the corporatist ineffective head of the DNC. Put a progressive in that position. You wont get change without change in DNC leadership. LOCAL elections. We have to win ground up elections and speaking of local. DWS (in my first point) has a real credible challenger and I dont hear anything about him. We have to be talking about these down ballot races If you dont have majorities in the State house and senates they can and will codify their beliefs into law (Like NC HB2) .A democratic President is at best a firewall against the looney tunes right. They cant lead a movement without a sympathetic congress I think Bernie would acknowledge and support every one of those point. If can cant bring yourself to vote for Hillary…thats your vote, but there are so many other areas that need your attention and its crucial that you show up to vote these down ballot races. We all saw what staying home did in 2010…lets not do it again!”
