This Is The Jeff Sessions Election And The GOP Is Just Along For The Ride

The Gist: Association with Sessions and his hard line on immigration, with its nativist echoes, confers instant credibility in a presidential campaign defined by Donald Trump.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is finally getting angry. Last week, the Washington Post editorial published a harsh dismissal of Sanders’s presidential campaign, saying he was just telling progressives what they wanted to hear. “That’s not a new argument,” Sanders told reporters on Thursday. “I know the Washington Post may think I’m radical, but I’m not.” This is the latest attempt to distance himself from the political establishment—and it will probably go better than his “establishment” critiques of Planned Parenthood.

Agree or Disagree?

Election law scholar Rick Hasen: “The best way to amend the Constitution on the issue of money in politics is to change the Supreme Court. All of these important campaign finance cases have been 5-4. The next President may get to appoint up to four Supreme Court justices, potentially changing the balance of power on this issue. That’s why I said in a TPM piece recently that the most important civil rights issue of the 2016 election is the composition of the Supreme Court itself.”

Say What?!

“Look, Ted Cruz is a total liar. I am so against Obamacare. I’ve been saying it for two years in my speeches, I’m going to repeal and replace Obamacare. I don’t even know where he gets this.”

– Trump was pretty upset Cruz suggested that he was a fan of Obamacare.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “As a counter point to the discussion about activist takeover of Federal facilities and how stupid the activists are and how the action ought to be punished, I want to draw everybody’s attention to a situation 45 years ago here in Milwaukee when AIM (American Indian Movement) occupied an abandoned Coast Guard facility in the downtown lakefront of Milwaukee. No shots were fired, no mass arrests (maybe none?), and the occupation went on for years funded, in part, by the State of Wisconsin and the US government. Please read about sane and constructive conflict in a time of madness.”
