White House press secretary Jay Carney brushed off Mitt Romney’s new claim that President Obama is an “outsourcer-in-chief,” accusing him of using schoolyard shenanigans to rebut Democratic attacks on his business record.
“I think there is an element here of ‘I know you are, but what am I?” Carney said. Romney’s attack “doesn’t pass the laugh test,” he said.
Democrats have been pounding Romney with ads on Bain Capital in recent weeks, many of which cite a Washington Post report that the firm invested in companies that relied on outsourcing and offshoring. In response, the RNC and Romney began a new effort on Tuesday to tar Obama with the same “outsourcer-in-chief” charge, citing reports that some stimulus investments in clean energy went to foreign companies.
Carney noted that the companies cited by the RNC told The New York Times on Tuesday that the claims were false and that any employees they hired abroad were unrelated to stimulus grants.
“They didn’t create jobs overseas, they created jobs here in the United States,” Carney said.
