Jon Stewart commended former President Bill Clinton’s decision to use “facts” and “numbers that were real” in his speech at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month.
“I thought it was a bold choice,” Stewart said Thursday.
“I was just determined to get the facts right and to simplify the argument without being simplistic,” Clinton said. “I didn’t want to talk down to people. I wanted to explain what I thought was going on.”
Clinton spoke at the convention for more than 40 minutes, often ad-libbing his remarks. His speech was also one of the better-received appearances of the three-day event. Clinton told Stewart that in times of confusion and frustration during an election year, “explanation is way more important than eloquence, and rhetoric falls on deaf ears.”
