Outgoing Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ) feels sympathy for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).
At the press conference Tuesday announcing his retirement Andrews said the New Jersey governor is likely to be attacked for anything he says or does because of the George Washington Bridge scandal.
“I think he’s in the middle of this vortex of bloodsport right now where anything he says or does is going to be attacked because it’s good for ratings,” Andrews said at the press conference. “And I do empathize with that. I don’t know whether he’s right or wrong, I don’t know whether what he did is right or wrong, there’s a process to find that out. But I do think that he’s in a position where everything he’s done now is ignored because of the controversy swirling around him and I think that that doesn’t serve the public very well either. So I do have empathy.”
Andrews himself has been the target of a House Ethics Committee investigation for alleged misuse of campaign funds. Andrews maintains that he is innocent.
On Friday, David Wildstein, the former head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said through an attorney, Christie was aware of the lane closures at that the bridge scandal is centered around.
