Chris Christie looks out over a crowd during a gathering at Colin Powell elementary school in heavily Hispanic Union City, N.J., Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, after he ceremonially signed a bill that lowers tuition costs at public colleges for New Jersey students who lack lawful immigration status. Christie signed the bill privately last month. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) will deliver his State of the State address on Tuesday amid the escalating controversy surrounding the governor and lane closures on the George Washington Bridge last year.

Christie will speak at 3 p.m. in the Trenton, N.J. state house.

On Monday, TPM obtained a letter showing that New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D) attempted to alert Christie to the lane closures shortly after they opened again.

A new theory has emerged in the scandal suggesting that the lane closures were linked to a billion dollar development project in Fort Lee, rather than Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich’s decision to endorse Christie for re-election last year.
