Virginia Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds, a former gubernatorial nominee, was in critical condition Tuesday after being stabbed in his home, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
The Times-Dispatch also reported Deed’s son Gus was found dead from a gunshot wound, citing law enforcement sources.
The Bath County Sheriff’s Office told TPM that local authorities and the Virginia state police were responding to an incident in Millboro, Va., but declined to give other information.
Virginia State Police said in a statement that authorities were on the scene of an assault of a state legislator and had found a second individual dead at the residence.
“At 7:25 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to Senator Deeds’ residence in Bath County,” the statement read. “Senator Deeds was flown from the scene to UVA Hospital. A second individual at the residence is deceased.”
Susan Schaar, clerk of the Virginia State Senate, confirmed to TPM that an incident had occurred and Deeds had been flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. for treatment.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time,” she said.
The investigation was ongoing, according to the statement from Virginia State Police.
Deeds beat Virginia Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2009, but lost the general election to Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).
