Texas State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte (D) is announcing her candidacy as state Sen. Wendy Davis’s (D) running mate on Thursday.

Van de Putte will announce her candidacy for lieutenant governor on Thursday, according to multiple Texas news outlets. Democrats had long been hoping that Van de Putte, a Latina from the southern region of Texas, would run for lieutenant governor.

According to the Houston Chronicle, some Democrats feel that Van de Putte, a Latina, would help bring ethnic diversity to the Democratic ticket and help Davis with shoring up support among Hispanic voters.

Currently, there are four Republicans also running for lieutenant governor: Incumbent David Drewhurst, state Sen. Dan Patrick, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.
