The Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down section four of the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act, the piece of the law used to identify the states and local governments that must first clear any changes to their voting laws with the federal government.
The nine states covered were included due to their histories of racial discrimination: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Misssissippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
Along with those states, there are some counties covered that are located in states that are not covered as a whole. Those counties and townships are located in five other states: California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota.
