Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Tuesday he won’t come to the floor again to try and persuade Republicans to drop their objections to initiating House-Senate budget negotiations.
“I won’t be coming back to the floor again while my colleagues object,” he said.
The Arizona Republican warned that by blocking regular order on budget talks, Republicans are giving Democrats a reason to reform the filibuster with a bare majority of senators via the so-called nuclear option.
“I want to tell my colleagues that continue to do this that, with my strenuous objections, the majority will become frustrated and the majority can change the rules of the Senate,” McCain said. “They can do that.”
He took shots at Republican colleagues including Sens. Marco Rubio (FL), Ted Cruz (TX) and Mike Lee (UT). “Sometimes when I hear my colleagues here talk about how they are Ronald Reagan republicans — I don’t think Ronald Reagan would have disagreed we should have a budget,” he said.
