Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood explained Sunday that the automatic spending cuts set to go into effect March 1 would cause flight delays because the Federal Aviation Administration would have to furlough air traffic controllers.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” LaHood said the FAA would first look to break off contracts in order to reduce costs, but ultimately would be forced to furlough air traffic controllers, which take up a substantial part of its budget.
