The French National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, approved a law to legalize same-sex marriage and allow same-sex couples to adopt children, the Associated Press reports.
Pushed by majority Socialist Party, the bill passed 329 votes to 229 votes Tuesday, despite objections from the right. The bill now heads to the French Senate, where the Socialists also hold a majority.
Polls show a majority of French people in favor of allowing same-sex marriage.
