Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Sunday argued that the tax issue has been settled and called on Congress to turn to spending cuts.
“Now it’s time to pivot and turn to the real issue, which is our spending addiction,” McConnell said during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
McConnell blamed Senate Democrats and President Obama for dragging out negotiations because they aren’t serious about cutting spending. “We don’t need to have these crises,” he said. “We need to cut spending. It doesn’t — it shouldn’t require a crisis to get the president and the Democratic majority in the Senate to start focusing on the real problem, which is that we spend too much.”
But McConnell brushed off a question on whether he was prepared to allow the nation to default if a deal wasn’t reached by the time the debt ceiling is reached. “Well, look, it’s not even necessary to get to that point,” he said.
