In response to Apple’s official announcement on Monday that it will be replacing Google Maps with its own homegrown Apple Maps system as the default option on the iPhone and iPad, a Google spokesperson provided the following statement to TPM:
“We’ve been working on maps for years, in fact just announced some exciting new developments for Google Maps and Google Earth last week, and are looking forward to continuing to build the perfect map for our users in the months and years ahead.”
Google’s reference to its June 6 announcement of new Google Maps and Earth 3D rendering technology belies the fact that the company attempted to preempt Apple’s maps defection, which some tech writers have taken as a sign that Google is worried about the potential of Maps eating into its market share.
