Poll: Close Senate Race In New Mexico

The new Rasmussen poll of the open Senate race in New Mexico shows a potentially close race, in the contest to succeeding retiring Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman.

Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich leads Republican former Rep. Heather Wilson by a margin of 46%-42%. At the same time, Wilson edges Democratic state Auditor Hector Balderas by 43%-42%. The survey of likely voters was conducted on April 3, and has a ±4.5% margin of error.

Wilson served int he House from 1998 until 2008, when she ran for the state’s other Senate seat and narrowly lost the Republican primary. Heinrich picked up Wilson’s former House seat that same year, and was narrowly re-elected in the swing district in 2010. Balderas was elected state Auditor in 2006, and re-elected in 2010.
