Davis, Steele Admit Democrats Could Take Back The House

Last week, TPM reported that Democrats feel they have a good chance of winning the 25 seats necessary to take back the House of Representatives in November. Over the last few days, a few Republicans have let on that they agree.

Former Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) who served as chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee warned in an op-ed in The Hill that Democrats could retake the House: “For Democrats to take 25 seats, they will need a wave. No presidential reelection in recent memory has yielded a 25-seat gain for the president’s party, with the exception of 1964, which was not technically a reelection,” he wrote. “Continued polarization and obstruction could create such a wave.”

Last week, former RNC chairman Michael Steele made a similar observation: “Twenty-five seats will be tough, I think, for the GOP to keep in an environment where if their message doesn’t click, their momentum isn’t there. It could be very, very hard.”
