Mitt Romney told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd on Wednesday that he favored a yearlong extension of the payroll tax cut currently under debate in Congress, but he was agnostic as to what House Republicans should do to get it to pass.

“I hope the House and the Senate, Republicans and Democrats, are able to get this resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

Asked about remarks by supporter Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), who shares a spokesman in Eric Fehrnstrom, critical of Speaker Boehner’s inflexibility in the fight, Romney declined to judge the House GOP’s behavior.

“I’m not going to throw gasoline on what is already a fire,” he said. “What we really need is a President who’s a leader.”
