Earlier today, my colleague Eric Kleefeld flagged an RNC fundraising letter, written by our old friend Michael Steele, in which he floats the possibility that Barack Obama, in concert with ACORN, will try to rig the 2010 Census in order to rob Republicans of electoral votes and Congressional seats in 2012. Eric dispatched with that…thinking…very nicely, but now ACORN has weighed in for itself. “I am disappointed in Mr. Steele’s repetition of lies and distortions about our work for crass fundraising purposes.” Full response is below the fold.

Statement from Bertha Lewis, CEO/Chief Organizer of ACORN

April 9, 2009

In response to a fundraising email sent by Michael Steele, Ms. Lewis said:

“I am disappointed in Mr. Steele’s repetition of lies and distortions about our work for crass fundraising purposes. ACORN is not getting billions from the federal government. We are not in charge of the Census. Just like the accusations of “voter fraud,” – charges that were debunked repeatedly – these are imaginary and false. The truth is that ACORN’s 500,000 member families are deeply engaged in ending the foreclosure crisis, winning quality, affordable health care for all Americans, and supporting programs to help Americans get back to work.

“To show Mr. Steele the real ACORN, I am inviting him to meet with me at the home of a family that ACORN has saved from foreclosure. I look forward to hearing back from him as to whether he is interested in getting his facts straight.”
