Lieberman: Afghanistan More Like WWII Than Vietnam

Sen. Joseph Lieberman

On FOX News a few minutes ago, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) — in endorsing Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal’s imminent request for more troops in Afghanistan — told Neil Cavuto that the U.S. predicament in Afghanistan is more like World War II than Vietnam.

“If we pull out or try a strategy that doesn’t work, those who attacked us will regain that country,” Lieberman said. That’s unthinkable.”

Saying that the situation was different than the Vietnam War because the U.S. was attacked by Afghanistan (or at least those who found safe haven there), the Senator offered a somewhat odd analogy:

It’s more like, I hate to use the analogy, but like the second World War, if shortly after it was over the Nazis began to form again and try to take back Germany from a new democratic government. What would we have done? We wouldn’t have stood by and let it happen.
