Well, that didn’t take long…

Just three days after the news was announced that they’ve been hired to probe campaign finance allegations against a heretofore obscure Arizona county supervisor, Joseph diGenova and Victoria Toensing went before the cameras in Maricopa County.

The media-hungry GOP lawyer power couple was a ubiquitous presence pushing the Lewinsky scandal on cable news during the 90s, but has largely been starved of the spotlight since then.

But those days are over. On Monday, Maricopa County’s hardline prosecutor, Andrew Thomas — a close ally of notorious anti-immigration Sheriff Joe Arpaio — announced he’d hired the legal tandem to look into the allegations against Don Stapley, a county supervisor. As we detailed yesterday, Thomas and Arpaio have long sought to go after Stapley, a political antagonist of both men.

It’s unclear exactly what was said at this afternoon’s press conference — we’ll let you know soon enough. And also unclear is who footed the bill for diGenova and Toensing’s flights from Washington DC to Phoenix. A columnist for the Arizona Republic says, without elaborating, it was taxpayers. Michael Scerbo, a spokesman for Thomas’s office, told TPMmuckraker he didn’t know who had paid, and invited us to file a public records request to find out.
