MoveOn.org released a statement today about Sen. Harry Reid’s announcement that the Senate health care bill will include an opt-out public option. Here’s the full text, from Justin Ruben, executive director of MoveOn.org:
“Today, Senator Reid announced a bill will move to the Senate floor with the “opt-out” version of a public option. We applaud Senator Reid’s leadership in standing up to the special interests who are trying to kill the public option outright, or through mechanisms like a ‘trigger.’
“With this announcement and Speaker Pelosi’s efforts to pass a healthcare bill with a robust public option, there’s now real momentum towards meaningful health care reform. Still, a handful Conservative Democrats are threatening to join with Republicans to block an up-or-down vote on a health care bill.
“MoveOn members are intensifying our efforts to press these Senators not to stand in the way of reform. And we will continue to work with progressive leaders in both chambers to make sure that the bill that lands on the President’s desk includes a robust public option available everywhere, makes certain that health care is affordable for working families and covers those most in need. “
