David Worley, the lone Democrat on Georgia’s state election board, on Sunday called on Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to launch an investigation into President Donald Trump for demanding that the state’s election officials “find” votes to undo his defeat against President-elect Joe Biden.
In an email to Raffensperger, Worley blasted Trump’s attempt to browbeat the secretary of state into helping him overturn the election during a rambling hour-long phone call, which saw the President go as far as threatening Raffensperger with criminal prosecution.
Overturning the election results in Georgia, of course, would not do anything to alter Biden’s Electoral College victory.
“To say that I am troubled by President Donald Trump’s attempt to manipulate the votes of Georgians would be an understatement,” Worley wrote in the email.
He asserted that “our job as members of the State Election Board is to enforce the Georgia Election Code.”
“Among our responsibilities is to determine whether probable cause exists to refer potential civil and criminal violations of the Code to the Georgia Attorney General and local District Attorneys,” Worley told Raffensperger.
The official emphasized his alarm over Trump’s gambit in an interview with the Washington Post, which had published the phone call on Sunday.
“It’s a crime to solicit election fraud, and asking the secretary to change the votes is a textbook definition of election fraud,” Worley told the Post.
