MSNBC’s David Shuster today discussed the story, broken last week by TPMDC’s Christina Bellantoni, that Republican candidate for Senate Scott Brown doesn’t provide health care to his campaign staffers.
Brown’s staffers were hired as “independent contractors,” meaning they must pay their own payroll taxes and health care costs.
Shuster suggested the special election — in which Brown is opposing Democrat Martha Coakley — has become a “referendum on hypocrisy.”
But Leonardo Alcivar, a Republican strategist, countered, pointing out that Brown’s staffers have health insurance through other sources.
Besides, he said, the election is “about spending. It’s not about these Washington ‘gotcha’ games.”
