Sean Hannity welcomed Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele onto his program tonight to talk about recent events in Congress, as well as take a look at his party’s future – and his own, in the wake of his controversial decision to seek re-election as RNC chair.

Steele, of course, thanked “[Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell and the Senate leadership” for getting Majority Leader Harry Reid to abandon an earmark-filled omnibus spending bill, and expressed hope that the deal to extend the Bush tax cuts would pass in the House. Notably, he also declined to join Hannity in ripping the six Senate Republicans who didn’t back making the Bush tax cuts permanent, and the nine Republican senators who allowed voting on a new START treaty to begin – rather, Steele urged Hannity to remember that “there’s gotta be a balancing act” and that “there’s a lot more behind that vote than the casting of it.”
Finally, Hannity asked Steele to address his critics: Steele replied that “the job isn’t done,” and that he’s running for re-election because “I don’t believe in quitting a fight.” He also defended his fundraising record, noting that the party’s brought in almost $190 million since last year. Hannity, for his part, was baffled that the Republicans had “the best midterm election in 70 years, and there’s still infighting.” There certainly wasn’t any infighting on this night between Hannity and Steele, though.
