Is Wisconsin the new Egypt? Or perhaps a fiscal 9/11? That’s what The Daily Show sought to answer last night, as Jon Stewart analyzed a number of metaphors being tossed around in the media to find the one that best fits the situation in Madison.
Many pundits and politicians have compared the protests in Wisconsin to the uprising in Egypt that ended President Hosni Mubarak’s three decades in power. Stewart minced no words in shooting down that comparison.
“They’re not the fucking same, in any way, shape, or form, at all,” Stewart said.
“Is this really the same as people in the Middle East throwing off years of dictatorship, or was that just the last story you saw on the news?” he added.
And if that was the case, he said, then why not compare the protests to Charlie Sheen’s well-documented struggles with substance abuse — in which case, Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) would be best compared to crack cocaine?
In the end, the most apt comparison Stewart found for Wisconsin’s protesters was the Tea Party, since both groups have staged mass political demonstrations. And, more strikingly, both groups wear similar hats — tricorn hats for tea parties, and triangular cheese heads, the signature head gear of Green Bay Packer football fans, for the Wisconsinites.
