Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald (R) — who along with his brother, state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, and Gov. Scott Walker, has been instrumental in passing the anti-public employee union legislation that sparked the wave of protests and recall elections in the state — has now officially launched his campaign for U.S. Senate.

“While the specific reforms may differ, the lessons we learned in Wisconsin can, and should be applied to the federal government,” Fitzgerald said in a statement. “Spending less than government takes in once seemed liked an impossible task, but I just lead [sic] the Assembly through a gauntlet of opposition to a truly balanced budget. If we can do it in Wisconsin, we can do it in DC.”

Fitzgerald previously said in late August that he would be running, but now it is official. Also in the race for the Republican nomination are former Gov. Tommy Thompson, former Congressman Mark Neumann, and state Sen. Frank Lasee.

The seat has been held for four terms by Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl, who announced his retirement this past May. The frontrunner for the Democratic nomination is Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.
