Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) went straight for it on Libya on This Week with Christiane Amanpour, saying that it was the wrong decision by President Obama to involve the US in the country, as former Defense Secretary Robert Gates had previously said there was was no American national interest there.

“Clearly this was about regime change,” Bachmann said. “Now we have a mess in Libya.”

She also made plain her concern with how a post-Qaddafi Libya might look, saying that there’s “tremendous instability” right now, and that in the end, the country is very important…..because of the “oil revenues,” which could be used to fund terrorism.

Earlier in the interview Amanpour pressed the Congresswoman about Bachmann’s statement on the plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the United States, which some charge was connected to the Iranian Government, when she called it an “Act of war.”

Bachmann said that she “Wouldn’t take my eye off the ball on the fundamental problem in the Middle East,” i.e. extremist elements in the region, like she claimed President Obama has. She said that Iran is set to increase its influence in the region in the wake of the US pullout scheduled for the end of this year, saying that if Iran were to get a nuclear weapon, it would “change the course of history.”
