Today On The Trail: February 27, 2012

The Michigan and Arizona primaries are a day away. Here are ten things you need to know.

  • Romney moves ahead of Santorum in Michigan: Mitt Romney has surpassed Rick Santorm in Michigan according to a Public Policy Polling survey released Sunday night. The new numbers show Romney with 39%, Santorum with 37%, 13% for Ron Paul, and 9% for Newt Gingrich. With Romney’s lead within the margin of error and the primary taking place on Tuesday, it should be a close race. The TPM Poll Average has Romney ahead by 3.8 points.
  • Romney is headed for a big win in Arizona: A day before the Arizona primary, Mitt Romney appears headed for an easy victory. The latest survey from Public Policy Polling has Romney with 43% to Rick Santorum’s 26%, with 18% for Newt Gingrich and 11% for Ron Paul. The TPM Poll Average has Santorum coming down steadily.
  • Romney surpasses Santorum in national poll: Rick Santorum’s performance in the Arizona debate last week didn’t do him any favors according to polls. After leading the pack, Mitt Romney has now surpassed him in Gallup’s daily tracking poll. Romney’s back on top with 31% to Santorum’s 29%. Newt Gingrich 15% and Ron Paul has 11%.
  • New Ohio poll out today: Monday morning, Quinnipiac will release the results of a poll of likely Republican primary voters on the GOP field of candidates.
  • Romney promotes Brewer endorsement: Mitt Romney’s campaign sent out an email, reserved in tone, announcing Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s endorsement of him hours after she made the announcement on NBC’s Meet the Press. Brewer said in her endorsement, “I think Mitt is by far the person that can go in and win.”
  • Democrats schedule conference call over Romney’s immigration stance: The DNC has organized a conference call hosted by Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, Rep. Charlie Gonzalez and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta on Monday to discuss Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s endorsement of Romney. Democrats argue that “Mitt Romney would be the most extreme presidential nominee of our time on immigration,” and Brewer’s endorsement only helps their case.
  • Romney dispatches son to Idaho: Romney’s son Josh Romney, a real estate developer who lives in Utah, will campaign in Idaho for his father Monday. Josh will hold four “Meet & Greet/Caucus Training” events in four different cities in Idaho. Idaho is a Super Tuesday state.
  • Santorum gets Secret Service protection: Rick Santorum is finally getting Secret Service protection on the trail, CNN reports.
  • Santorum plans a grueling campaign day Monday: The day before the Michigan primary, Rick Santorum will keep busy campaigning. In the morning, Santorum will be a guest on 4 radio shows as well as Fox and Friends. Santorum will then hold two afternoon events before doing more radio interviews and another Fox appearance, this time on Hannity.
  • Gingrich skips Michigan for Tennessee: Newt Gingrich is looking beyond Tuesday’s contests to Super Tuesday the week after. Gingrich, in addition to winning his home state, would love to continue his inroads, particularly in a Southern state. Newt Gingrich will spend Monday in Tennessee before returning back to Georgia again.
