Newt Campaign Charging $50 To Have Picture Taken With Him

Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich’s campaign may be low on cash, high on debt, and running out of voters, but he does have a new angle for raising money: Charging $50 to supporters who want to have their picture taken with the candidate.

“Some campaigns make you travel all the way to Wall Street to pay $2,500 for a photo with a candidate,” a Gingrich spokesman told National Journal in an e-mail, following an event in Delaware. “We are trying out a new tactic and asking our supporters at our rallies for a nominal donation. And guess what, it is working.”

Supporters who pose for a photo with the candidate are now being told that they can find the pictures on the campaign site – after providing their credit card information in order to donate money.

Of course, this system might imply that other candidates are able to charge $2,500 at big Wall Street fundraising events, because their wealthy supporters view the whole process as being worth it. By comparison, Newt’s $50 charge would seem to illustrate a very different market value.
