SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico has reported 1,914 new Zika cases over the past week.
Health Secretary Ana Rius said Friday there are 10,690 cases altogether, including 1,035 involving pregnant women. Zika has been tied to severe birth defects.
Rius said 90 people have been hospitalized because of the virus.
Officials also say 30 people have been diagnosed with a temporary paralysis condition known as Guillain-Barre that has been linked to Zika.
The newest statistics were released a day after the U.S. surgeon general visited Puerto Rico and said he expected 25 percent of people on the island will be infected by Zika by year’s end.

Good thing the Republican Congress refused to pass Zika legislation and approve funding to research and develop countermeasures before they went on vacation in June. Nothing like letting it run rampant with no response for a few months during the summer to really make a political point about throwing people to the curb and increasing human suffering at every opportunity possible.
Besides, people too poor to afford to stay inside air conditioned houses 24/7 are just getting what they deserved. They’ve done it to themselves.
