White House Budget Chief Mick Mulvaney’s protégé was confirmed by a 50-49 Senate vote Thursday to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — despite her lack of any experience in financial regulation. Kathy Kraninger’s background is mostly in homeland security, and, in addition to opposing the direction in which Mulvaney has taken the CFPB, Democrats objected to Kraninger’s role as a White House Budget Office official working on the administration’s bungled Hurricane Maria response in Puerto Rico and its family separation policy.
