Two Arizona cities plan to sue the state over its controversial new immigration law.

Both the Tucson and Flagstaff city councils voted yesterday to sue Arizona. They are the first cities in Arizona to approve legal challenges to the tough new law.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon has also been an outspoken opponent of the law — and had pushed to sue the state — but failed to win the support of his city council.

Arizona’s new law makes it a state crime to be in the U.S. illegally, and requires law enforcement officers to demand the papers of anyone they reasonably suspect is in the country illegally.

Both Tucson and Flagstaff cited economic concerns as the driving factor behind their decisions, saying the new law would be expensive to enforce and would hurt tourism.
