President Donald Trump is trying to craft a winning 2020 plan, taking into account that he’s lost popularity in some of the suburbs and purple states that were critical to his 2016 victory.

According to the Washington Post, that plan involves combining his populist message with the financial might of the Republican Party infrastructure, which he didn’t have last time.

Nevertheless, his aides worry that without a candidate they can get Republicans to hate (like Hillary Clinton), Trump will fall short. Hence the GOP’s attempt to demonize the eventual Democratic nominee, seen in the Club for Growth’s broadside against Beto O’Rourke, who is expected to announce his run soon.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is another contender who has reportedly caught Republicans’ attention, and they are keeping a close eye on the early enthusiasm her campaign has garnered.

Fixed one of your headlines again, TPM. I’m really getting sick of doing all this work for free, Josh!

  2. The plan is simple: stay out of prison.

  3. And he’s hired a new law firm, the renowned, Dewey, Cheatem and Howe!

President Donald Trump is trying to craft …

And I’m sorry, but Donald has never “crafted” anything in his life.

  4. Demonizing the opponent isn’t really a startlingly new technique. And I don’t see how this fairly obvious “strategy” increases his appeal beyond his base. And maybe we have negative points about Trump we could point out. He’s done worse things than skateboard.

  5. I look forward to seeing him try to continue the economic populist charade now that he’ll have an actual record as president to defend.

I expect to see more of what we saw in the midterms: lots of race based anti-immigrant fear mongering and distractions.
