Staffer: ‘Family Commitments’ Kept Bunning Away From Health Reform Vote

Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), the lone senator to miss this morning’s health care reform vote, has an excuse for his absence he shares with most of those trapped in D.C. during this week’s legislative slog.

From the Louisville Courier-Journal:

“The senator had family commitments,” Bunning spokesman Mike Reynard said in an e-mail.

Bunning isn’t running for reelection, so he didn’t need to translate his vocal opposition to Democratic-led health care reform efforts like his Republican colleagues with elections in their future did. So rather than cast the vote his party made sure was held on Christmas Eve, Bunning skipped town.

His exact whereabouts are still unknown. It’s not the first time that’s been the case this year. From the Courier-Journal:

The missed vote was one of 21 this month — nearly half of all Senate floor votes — that the retiring senator skipped.

Reynard did not answer questions about where the senator was nor did he provide an explanation for so missed votes.
