WASHINGTON (AP) — Kentucky Republican Rand Paul says he will seek re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2016.
Paul said in a press release Tuesday that he hopes to continue “the task of repairing and revitalizing our great nation” in the Senate.
Paul is also considering running for the Republican nomination for president in 2016. His team believes there are ways around a Kentucky law that seems to prohibit running for Senate re-election and president at the same time.
Fellow Kentuckian Mitch McConnell, who will be Senate majority leader after the new year, said Paul was “essential in the U.S. Senate.”

Without the Jr. Senator the nation’s most exclusive appendix would just be a useless pouch between legislative intestines instead of a handy source of often cribbed but still pointless quotes and soundbites…
The biggest takeaway I get from that announcement is that he is freezing out other potential candidates from entering the Senate race, while keeping his options open for a POTUS run.
I’ve always suspected that even Rand realizes that he is simply not electable at the presidential level. This suggests to me that he knows he should try to hold on to his day job.
Hey, if you can get around a law, get around it. They’re really just suggestions, aren’t they? Oh, and “I’m a Republican so they don’t really apply to me, anyway…” And the President is lawless…go figure.
Rand is far too arrogant to believe he is unelectable. He may recognize that 2016 is too soon, and that losing his spotlight in the Senate is counterproductive in the long run, but he surely believes he will be President one day.
