DENTON, Texas (AP) — University of North Texas campus police have fatally shot a student who allegedly threatened a campus officer with an ax.
University officials tell The Dallas Morning News (http://bit.ly/1TJpXOd) that the shooting happened near the Denton campus early Sunday. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Ryan McMillan, whose 21st birthday was Saturday.
UNT spokeswoman Margarita Venegas says police responded about 1 a.m. Sunday to a report that someone was breaking car windows about two blocks from campus.
Venegas says when the officer arrived, McMillan approached him with the ax in his hand and the officer shot him. The Texas Rangers are investigating. The officer has been place on administrative duty pending results of the investigation.

Students routinely get intoxicated and do stupid things. It doesn’t mix well with firearms, no matter who has them.
I have no idea if it was reasonable for the officer to shoot to kill, but I hope most campus police understand that it is very rare that a student being destructive and belligerent on a weekend night is a great enough danger to require a lethal response.
Eeeeeeh, I really need a little more information before making a judgment. Is this another case of the guy walking away from the officer’s itchy trigger finger?
Tragic for the family.
Texas students are turning in their lassos for axes? Brings a whole new Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to a good conservative education.
Higher education via Texas.
I’m pretty sure that there is such a thing as a stun gun or taser and even shooting to disable, but noooooooooooooooo, the friggin gun psychos don’t get confirmed kills without the actual, you know, kill.
If this cop isn’t feeling remorse, then he needs to plug his heart back in, that was just a drunk 21 year old kid.
