HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds, who was arrested in Zimbabwe on Monday for allegedly possessing pornography and violating immigration laws, has arrived at the Magistrates Court in the capital Harare where he awaits proceedings.

The ex-congressman, who lost his seat representing Illinois almost 20 years ago after being convicted of statutory rape, told journalists at the court that he had not received any assistance from the U.S. Embassy.

According to Zimbabwe’s state-controlled newspaper, the Herald, Reynolds overstayed his visa and allegedly also brought several Zimbabwean models and other women to his hotel room where he took photographs and videos.

Reynolds has won some prominence in Zimbabwe for helping to draw investment to hotel and office projects and is also known for his opposition to sanctions against President Robert Mugabe.
