On The Early Show today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) defended his state’s controversial new immigration law by saying it was necessary because of the federal government’s failure to secure Arizona’s border.
“This law is a response to the president’s and the administration’s failure to secure our borders,” McCain said. “Our borders are broken. It’s worse than I have ever seen it.”
The federal government has a responsibility to secure the borders. They have not.
Asked about concerns that the law — which requires law enforcement officers to ask for the papers of anyone who they reasonably suspect is in the country illegally — McCain said, “I do not want any discriminatory behavior.”
He also said he believes law enforcement officers “can implement this law without racial profiling” — though he didn’t say how.
