The Daily Show returned from a one-week vacation last night, and host Jon Stewart was stunned to discover all that had happened in his absence.

“When we left, the world’s two biggest trouble spots were Wisconsin and the set of Two and a Half Men,” he said. “And then suddenly, all holy hell is breaking loose.”

But of all the developments — the crisis in Japan, the death of polar bear and Internet sensation, Knut — Stewart used his opening monologue to address the just-launched military campaign on Libya.

“Wars aren’t kids, where you don’t have to pay attention to the youngest one because the oldest two will take care of it,” he said.

Further, Stewart noted, politicians have recently been saying that America is broke. If that’s true, how can we afford another war?

“You can’t simultaneously fire teachers and Tomahawk missiles,” Stewart said.

That’s when he discovered a solution to that conundrum, one that would solve America’s budget while allowing it to maintain a costly third war in the Middle East: Operation Blackboard Down, in which the U.S. would fire teachers — as missiles on Libya.
