Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said that he thought President Obama’s comment on the Supreme Court’s campaign finance decision was “kind of rude.”

In his State of the Union address, Obama said: “With all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections.”

The remark has evoked some controversy, particularly since Justice Samuel Alito appeared to mouth “not true” immediately afterward.

Hatch, for his part, said yesterday that “taking on the Supreme Court like he did, I thought it was kind of rude. It’s one thing to say that he differed with the court but another thing to demagogue the issue while the court is sitting there out of respect for his position.”

Hatch’s fellow Utahan Rep. Rob Bishop (R) also criticized the president: “It was definitely unprecedented to attack the Supreme Court while they’re there.”
