Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich advised Republicans today that it is “foolish” for them to focus on the crisis at the RNC, and instead should focus on “defeating Democrats” in the midterm elections.

On The Today Show, Gingrich was asked about potential pressure on Michael Steele to step down as RNC chair after a staffer spent donor money at a bondage-themed club.

“I think Michael Steele is capable of taking [the RNC] through the midterm election,” Gingrich said.

He continued:

The fact is that Michael Steele has raised a lot of money, campaigned very aggressively, helped win in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts. And I think that it’s foolish for Republicans to focus on Michael Steele as a person. I think what we ought to focus on defeating Democrats.
