Punxsutawney Phil wasn’t the only animal making predictions yesterday. In the spirit of the “animal pagan prophecy” holiday, Stephen Colbert introduced an animal he claimed could foresee the outcome of Egypt’s uprising: a cat named Christianne Aman-purr.
Colbert outlined Aman-purr’s credentials on the subject.
“You are an expert on Egypt,” Colbert said, “seeing as how you’re worshiped as a God there.”
He then asked the cat a complex question about the violent protests in Egypt, the various competing factions and what the end result would be. When the cat didn’t respond, Colbert tried a simpler tactic: he placed two bowls of cat food labeled “Democratic Uprising” and “Islamic Power Grab” on his desk. Whichever bowl the cat went for, Colbert said, would indicate the outcome of the turmoil.
Nonplussed, the cat moved toward neither bowl. So Colbert tried using a cat toy to instigate a decision. And then another cat toy. And then some light nudging. Yet the cat simply refused to weigh in for either side. Typical.
